Volleyball Earns First Playoff Victory

Grand Rapids, MI – The Timberwolves (16-12) Volleyball team played two matches in Day 1 of the Great Lakes District B Tournament. In the double elimination bracket North Central defeated Cuyahoga CC (10-10) by a score of 3-1 before falling to Southwestern Michigan College (28-7)  0-3.

The Timberwolves opened the game going back and forth with the Triceratops and a run by Tri-C would put the set out of reach. North Central played composed and aggressive coming out in the second set to dominate and rolled with the momentum and confidence through the rest of the sets, winning the game 3-1.

Set Scores: 15-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-9
Statistical Leaders:
  • Chloe Winchell (Freeland/Freeland) attacked the ball well at a .257 hitting percentage for 15 kills.
  • Annie Grew (Grand Ledge/Grand Ledge) had a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs.
  • Taylor Hafeman (Scottsbluff, NE/Scottsbluff) was strong on the back line picking up 21 digs.

The win advanced the Timberwolves to face another first round champion, Southwestern Michigan College in the second game.

The opening set showcased the strengths of both sides as points were exchanged and the game was tight, with the Roadrunners taking a run and winning the set 25-21. Strong serving from SMC in the second and third sets put the Timberwolves in a hole. Once they got on track they were point for point, but it was too much to overcome.

Statistical Leaders
  • Ceara LeBlanc (Brimley/Brimley) tied the record for most service aces in a 3 set match by laying down 6.
  • Grew had a team high 8 kills.
  • Madilyn Tornes (Dorr/Wayland Union) had 5 kills, 1 error on 18 attacks for a .222 hitting percentage.
  • Hafeman picked up 19 digs.

The tournament is a double elimination bracket. Having one loss, the Timberwolves are in a win or go home situation. They will continue to play as long as they continue to win. The next loss will end the season for North Central.

Friday, November 7th the Timberwolves will take on Lansing CC (15-13) at 1:00 p.m. at Grand Rapids Community College.
